What Is Polio?
Poliomyelitis or Infantile paralysis was a contagious disease that became an epidemic in America in the 1950's. Polio effects a persons nervous system and often cripples their muscles. The Virus travels through the blood stream destroying nerve cells. There are 3 different types of polio. There is spinal polio, which is the most common and can cause paralysis. Another type of polio is Bulbar polio, which is the least common type of polio. It affects the nerve in the brain stem and some of these nerves control eating and breathing. The third type of polio is Bulbospinal polio , which is the second most common and has symptoms of both Bulbar and Spinal Polio.
